The Victorian community sector is facing rapid growth and change, driven by funding changes, government reforms and a variety of social and economic factors.

This presents both challenges and opportunities. If managed correctly, we could be on the cusp of new golden era for the sector and the people we serve.

This is why VCOSS is excited to be working with the Department of Health and Human Services to develop a 10 year Community Services Industry Plan, articulating a future vision for the sector and a roadmap to get there.

A key part of this is listening to service organisations, service users and other peak bodies to better understand your perspectives and concerns.

We'll be hitting the road in October, visiting BendigoTraralgonBenella and Wyndham to collect your views.

The more voices we hear, the better the Industry Plan will be.

I encourage you to attend a local meeting and make your contribution to the future of our sector.

Best wishes,
Emma King

Strong Foundations: Getting it Right in the First 1000 Days

report by researchers at the Murdoch Children's Research Institute highlights the importance the first 1,000 days has on a child's development and health.

New knowledge has revealed the significance of the first thousand days, and of the urgent need to reform policies, practices and systems in response.

The report finds disadvantage can be passed down through the generations at a cellularlevel. Biology changes in response to stress, poverty and other prolonged adverse experiences, and these changes can be passed on to children from their parents and grandparents.

With the NDIS roll out, the state government has an opportunity to review the policy. VCOSS will be convening a roundtable for community organisations to provide feedback on the impact and effectiveness of the policy; any issues with its implementation; and ideas for its future development.
